Malachi is a precious 6-month-old who was awaiting adoption. His future adoptive parents traveled from Marietta, GA to New Orleans to meet him for the first time. Malachi was born with a single ventricle defect which is a rare, complex heart defect that occurs when a child is born with one underdeveloped or non-functional ventricle in their heart. The heart typically has four chambers, whereas Malachi’s has only two. Since his birth, Malachi has had two open heart surgeries. His first surgery occurred when he was only three days old. On September 23 rd , he had a successful second surgery.
His mom says, “RMHC allows us the opportunity to stay close to the hospital and ensured
that I could visit him any time he needed. Other families who have been through the same
surgery told us things to be prepared for. They sat with me while Malachi was in surgery.
It has surprised me how quickly a community can form between families here at RMHC”.
